Mission Statement
The Peripheral Nerve Society is an international organization of physicians and scientists working together to develop and provide the best treatments for people who have peripheral nerve diseases. This goal is realized by cooperation - supporting research, training scientists and healthcare professionals, setting standards of care, creating new treatments, and facilitating clinical trials.
The Peripheral Nerve Society
The Peripheral Nerve Society was founded in 1994, having evolved from two groups of academic investigators interested in understanding the basic biology and function of the peripheral nervous system - the nature of nerve injury and repair. These groups met periodically in closed meetings to discuss advances in this understanding and how this knowledge might be applied to care for patients with genetic, traumatic, toxic, or metabolic nerve disease. The interests of our members encompass all aspects of the peripheral nervous system, both clinical and scientific, and range from electrophysiologic tools for diagnosis to molecular mechanisms of disease and nerve fiber regeneration. The Society is incorporated, and open to general membership by those interested in the peripheral nervous system and its diseases. DOWNLOAD application for PNS MEMBERSHIP. Complete the application form and fax to the Executive Secretary.

Journal of the Peripheral Nervous System
The Journal of the Peripheral Nervous System is the official journal of the Peripheral Nerve Society and the Quantitative Sensory Testing Society, and publishes original research reports, reviews, letters, and news covering every topic of scientific and clinical relevance to the peripheral nervous system. All manuscripts are subject to peer review by members of the Editorial Board or other experts chosen by them. It is copyrighted by the PNS and published four times a year by Blackwell Sciences, Inc. (ISSN 1085-9489). The Index Factor is 2.6. All articles are available on-line.

International Inflammatory Neuropathy Corsortium
The INC is a Standing Committee of the PNS with scheduled meetings and specific goals for education, treatment and research of the inflammatory neuropathies. See this link for more information.

Teaching Course in Clinical Neurophysiology
The British Society for Clinical Neurophysiology is pleased to announce the 7th Triennial Teaching Course in Clinical Neurophysiology, Wadham College, Oxford. The international faculty brings together a field of knowledgeable and enthusiastic clinicians and scientists from the UK, Europe, Japan and the USA. The course is residential and will consist of lectures, practical demonstrations, case discussions, debates and a quiz. The course is intended for clinical neurophysiologists in training and those requiring an update on current practice, neurologists, clinical physiologists and clinical scientists. A full range of neurophysiological topics will be covered in 9 half-day symposia. More information is available at www.BSCN-wadham-2008.org.uk .
Guidelines for Management of Neuropathy
The Peripheral Nerve Society has recently published three guidelines on the management of chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy, on multifocal motor neuropathy and on paraprotein-associated demyelinating neuropathy in the Journal of the Peripheral Nervous System. These guidelines are available as pdf documents via the links below.

Guideline for management of chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP)
Guideline for management of multifocal motor neuropathy
Guideline for management of paraprotein-associated demyelinating neuropathy
Guidance for preparation of additional management guidelines

Cochrane Neuromuscular Disease Group
The Cochrane Neuromuscular Disease Group (link is http://www.kcl.ac.uk/cochranenmd) is part of the Cochrane Collaboration, an international organisation that aims to help people make well informed decisions about healthcare by preparing systematic reviews of the effects of healthcare interventions. We have responsibility for reviewing the effectiveness of treatments for neuromuscular diseases, including disorders of the peripheral nervous system, muscle, neuromuscular junction and lower motor neuron and welcome offers to contribute to this task.
Archived Digital Images of Sensory Receptors
Emeritus Professor R.K. Winkelmann has made available on this web site the many images of sensory receptors that have been scattered in the literature. The images summarize his distinguished career and are provided with brief comments by the author and his colleagues. When using the images make reference to: Winkelmann RK (2005). Pain and the PNS
Pain is arguably the most important problem in medicine. It is certainly the major reason that patients seek medical treatment. The peripheral nervous system is critically involved in acute and chronic pain conditions. Patients with painful neuropathy should access the Links for Patients page to learn more about this problem and to contact neurologists who specialize in treating neuropathy.

Support the Educational Activities of the PNS
The PNS supports the education and training of junior neurologists and scientists by providing stipends for attending our biennial scientific meetings. If you would like to support this important activity of the PNS, please contact the Secretary/Treasurer of the Society. Credit card donations can be made directly to the Society via the secure PayPal web site accessed by clicking the button below. If you are donating for one of the new PNS Fellowships, please email us to let us know which individual you are supporting. Emails should go to Amber Millen (amillen@ucsd.edu).
